Florida Dental Insurance Guide

Florida dental insurance can put a smile on your face in many ways. Not only can it enable you to get that dental work you need, so you won’t be afraid to smile at people, but when you see the affordable rates and comprehensive coverage many plans offer, your smile will grow wider.

You may have Florida dental coverage already on a medical plan. But even if you do, you may find that the level of coverage offered on that plan is way below what a comprehensive dental plan will insure. In fact, even if you already have coverage, you may find that it’s worth buying a dental policy for the increased coverage it will offer you.

Also, if you pay for your medical insurance yourself, as opposed to its being a benefit through your employer, the additional money you pay for a dental rider may be more than the cost of a stand-alone dental plan. It may pay to drop the dental rider of your health insurance in favor of a stand-alone dental plan. Or the cost of your dental rider may be less than a stand-alone plan but may offer far less coverage.

Florida dental insurance choices

Just as with Florida health insurance, dental plans are not cookie-cutter. They come in all shapes and sizes. And, as with health insurance, there are both HMO and PPO plans. In an HMO dental plan, you select a dentist and always use that individual or group for your dental care. In a PPO plan, you get a list of practitioners and may see anyone on that list.

Discount dental plans help with the cost of dental visits, though they are not technically dental insurance plans. They do give you the option to select the dentist of your choosing, as long as they participate in the plan.

There are also indemnity dental insurance plans, which don’t save you as much money but give you complete say-so as to what dentist you visit.

Florida dental plans are available both for individuals and for families, just as with health insurance.

Florida dentistry can get expensive

The cost of a Florida dental plan on top of a health insurance plan may seem like a burden, but think of the cost of dentistry these days. While a cleaning, a set of x-rays, and a filling or two may not break your wallet, most work beyond that is pricey, and if insurance can cover, or at least help to pay that cost, it’s definitely a worthwhile investment.

What’s more, most dental coverage these days comes through employers, in the form of dental coverage on either a health plan or, even better, a stand-alone plan.

But what if you’re self-employed, unemployed, or working for a company that simply doesn’t offer health care as a benefit? You probably have individual or group health care that you purchased on your own. It may or may not include dental coverage, but consider purchasing a policy specifically for dental care anyhow.

You may be able to drop the dental coverage portion of your health insurance, for a corresponding reduction in premiums. And even if that is not the case, it’s worth it to have the extended coverage a dedicated dental policy provides.

In fact, that’s true even if your current coverage is from a health insurance policy paid for by your employer. Dental coverage is considerably less expensive than health coverage and is readily affordable by most people.

Know before you buy

Just as with medical insurance or with most things in this world, not all Florida dental insurance is equal. In fact, even within one company there may be more than one plan offered, or more than one level of coverage.

You may choose a lower premium with a higher deductible or a higher premium with a lower deductible. There may be a cap on the amount of claims you can put in for in one year. Other details of the coverage may vary, as well.

When you’re considering a plan, it pays to look into just what it offers, as well as what it costs, before you make your selection. It’s often well worthwhile to pay a little more and get better coverage.
